Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are common among teens and adults alike and are very different from occasional anxiety. Occasional anxiety involves temporary worry or fear and is a part of day to day life. Anxiety may sneak up on you as you are preparing for a test, making an important decision about what to do after high school, or preparing for a sporting event. Unfortunately, anxiety disorders are so much more. Anxiety disorders result in fears and worry getting worse with time and hindering everyday activities such as family life, school work, and relationships.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and various phobia-related disorders. Each type of disorder has its own associated symptoms and treatment options.

For example, a teen experiencing generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) may show excessive anxiety or worry a majority of day over a 6 month period. Some of these worries may include and significantly impact personal health, social interactions, school work, and everyday family life.

Generalized anxiety disorder symptoms may include:

  • Feeling restless, wound-up, or on-edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating; mind going blank
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty controlling feelings of worry
  • Sleep problems, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, restlessness, or unsatisfying sleep

Anxiety disorders can stem from a variety of sources. Just a few risk factors include…

  • Temperamental traits of shyness or behavioral inhibition in childhood
  • Exposure to stressful and negative life or environmental events in early childhood or adulthood
  • A history of anxiety or other mental illnesses in biological relatives
  • Some physical health conditions, such as thyroid problems or heart arrhythmia

Anxiety disorders can be overwhelming and impede healthy development. Contact us to identify if you are suffering from generalized anxiety disorders or other disorders such as panic disorders or phobia-related disorders. You do not need to suffer alone!
